AGRA: Two water treatment plants in the city will soon be upgraded with a cost of Rs 103.56 crore under the Gangajal project. The Jal Nigam has started making preparations for repairing and upgradation works at the two water works stations in Jeevani Mandi and Sikandra.
According to Jal Nigam officials, the 225 million litres per day (MLD) capacity water treatment plant at Jeevani Mandi will be overhauled with an expenditure of Rs 84.12 crore and the upgradation work on 144 MLD capacity water treatment plant at Sikandra will entail a cost of Rs 19.44 crore.
The tender process regarding this has been completed. Designing and planning for suitable implementation of technical plans has been initiated.
There are three water treatment facilities at Jeevani Mandi water works station that were established in 1964, 1976 and 1990 respectively. The first plant earlier used to treat 45 MLD water. The capacity of other two plants is of 90 MLD each. The total capacity of Jeevani Mandi water works is 225 MLD.
The amount of water treated by 225 MLD capacity treatment plant is much less as compared to its capacity. The meters to measure rate of flow of treated water are not in working condition. According to the sources, at present, around 150 MLD of water is treated at Jeevani Mandi. The plant operates on outdated mechanism and is in a poor condition.
Piyush Pankaj, general manager of Gangajal Project Jal Nigam, said, "The 144 MLD water treatment plant at Sikandra is 20 years old and requires repair. Compared to the Jeevani Mandi water treatment plant, the one at Sikandra is in a far better condition and does not require major upgradation.”
Pankaj said, “Ideally, water treatment plants require rehabilitation works after every 15 years.”
Under the Gangajal project, a 160 km pipeline will be laid from Palra Headworks in Bulandshahr’s Upper Ganga Canal to the Sikandra Water Works in Agra for supplying water.
