Felipe Massa signs up for 2017 Race of Champions

Felipe Massa will begin life after Formula One at the 2017 edition of the Race of Champions in Miami, Florida.

Massa, who announced his retirement during the Italian Grand Prix, has signed up for his fourth ROC event after appearances in 2004, 2005 and 2015. It will likely be the first event he takes part in after calling time on his 14-year F1 career.

The event takes place in January next year at Marlins Park, home of the Miami Marlins Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise.

"It's a fantastic pleasure for me to participate in the Race Of Champions for another year," Massa said. "The event is a big challenge and it's a great idea to have a race with the best drivers from all the different motor sport categories. I look forward to meeting up with my old friend and fellow countryman Tony Kanaan.

"In 2004 in Paris we made up a very good combination: he beat Sebastien Loeb and I beat Michael Schumacher until we were both given penalties for touching the guard rails too much..."

Massa is the second F1 driver to sign up to the event, following in the footsteps of ROC regular Sebastian Vettel. The event will take place on January 22 and 23.

ROC is making its first visit to the United States after visits to the Stade de France in Paris (2004-2006), London's Wembley Stadium (2007-2008), the 'Bird's Nest' Olympic Stadium in Beijing (2009), Düsseldorf's Esprit Arena (2010-2011), the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok (2012), Bushy Park Barbados (2014) and London's Olympic Stadium (2015).
