NUS, NTU ranked among top 5 universities in Asia: U.S. News & World Report

SINGAPORE — Both the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) are among the top five universities in Asia, according to the 2017 Best Global Universities ranking by digital news and information company U.S. News & World Report.

NUS was ranked second, while NTU ranked fifth among 263 ranked Asian universities, the report said. University of Tokyo was Asia’s top university. China’s Peking University and Tsinghua University were sandwiched between the Singapore varsities.

Globally, Harvard University was ranked top, out of 1,000 universities from across 65 countries. NUS placed 50th, while NTU ranked 74th.

The ranking was based on a university’s global and regional research reputation and academic research performance. These include publications, citations and international collaboration.

The methodology for this year’s ranking was tweaked to further emphasise excellence in academic research, said U.S. News.

Both NUS and NTU emerged among the top three in the 2016 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings in Asia, which was released in June. NUS was the top Asian university, and NTU was placed third.

In Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2016, which was also released in June, NUS was also Asia’s top university, while NTU came in second.
