Terracon Continues to Rise in ENR Rankings

10/24/16

Terracon, a leading provider of environmental, facilities, geotechnical, and materials services, has continued a pattern of growth and market presence expansion as evidenced in Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) annual listing of top design firms and top regional design firms.

Terracon has advanced in each of the following major lists:

Top 500 Design Firms - #32 (up from #35)

Top 100 Pure Designers - #16 (up from #17)

Top 200 Environmental Firms - #59 (up from #61)

Top 150 Global Design Firms - #63 (up from #71)

“Our growth reflects the support we have seen from our trusted clients, teaming partners, and local communities. It’s clients such as Eversource, Portsmouth NavalShipyard, and MassPort that have allowed us to continue on a path of expansion,” said Wendell (Wally) Shedd, New England regional manager for Terracon.

Terracon’s focus on strategic business sectors within its core service lines has resulted in strong growth — transportation revenues up 8 percent; power generation and transmission (including renewable energy) revenues up 45 percent; and oil and gas revenues up 39 percent. By providing local service with support from offices nationwide, Terracon continues to strive to support clients’ business objectives.

Terracon’s employee-owners are dedicated to giving back to the community, striving to educate their surrounding communities on sustainability, and voluntarily donating their technical skills and time to help protect and prolong limited resources. Terracon’s Manchester office recently provided the Lakes Region Conservation Trust (LRCT) with a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment at LRCT’s Fogg Hill Property in Center Harbor. The assessment, offered at half off Terracon’s standard commercial rate and at an expedited speed, helped LRCT secure a New Hampshire State wetlands grant.

A stellar example of the dedication Terracon Manchester’s employee-owners provide to the environment would be Mike and Muriel Robinette. The Robinette’s are devoted volunteers with the LRCT. They serve as property adopters for the trust, managing and maintaining the 13 acre Ragged Island on Lake Winnipesaukee, a task requiring approximately 200 hours per year. They also assist the LRCT by hiking and developing baseline easement reports on new properties. This work, which requires 100 hours annually, includes utilizing electronic mapping tools and scientific modeling programs to identify wetlands, vernal pools, and key habitats. Yet another 80 hours a year is donated to the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Lay Lakes Program, where the Robinette’s work as volunteer water quality monitors to obtain water samples from Lake Winnipesaukee. After UNH professors and graduate students analyze the samples, the Department of Environmental Services incorporates the results into regulatory and policy decisions that impact the entire State of New Hampshire.

“Terracon has continued to become more diversified through both organic and external growth,” said Gayle Packer, chief administrative officer for Terracon. “In the past 10 years, we have opened more than 50 new offices, expanding our services and value to more clients throughout the U.S.”

ENR performs annual surveys of the construction industry’s key segments and ranks companies engaged in general contracting, specialty contracting, engineering, architecture, and environmental services, among other specialties. The rankings, based on annual revenue at home and abroad, are further divided into specific market categories. A full list of ENR rankings can be found here.
