The Indonesian community from the southern region of Sumatra Island in Qatar (Kompaq), known as Wong Kito held a culinary promotion of Palembang food in Doha recently at MIA Park. Kompaq members comprise working individuals in various sectors, mostly in the oil and gas industry. The group is one of 51 Indonesian community organisations in Qatar under Indonesian Community Association in Qatar (Permiqa) led by Edwin Kurniawan.
Indonesian Ambassador to Qatar HE Muhammad Basri Sidehabi appreciated the culinary promotion arranged by Kompaq. He said Wong Kito plays an important role in supporting the mission of the embassy to promote good relations between Indonesia and Qatar"particularly in economic and socio-cultural activities."
The year 2016 is the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Qatar that started in 1976. The ambassador hoped that Wong Kito becomes an example of the personality of the Indonesian people in Qatar."Being expatriates in Qatar, Wong Kito members should abide by the rules and regulations of the country and keep unity and integrity among Indonesians in Qatar."
Kompaq Chairman Edi Ujang said the event promoted a variety of Palembang specialities famous traditional cuisine Pempek which is served with sweet and sour sauce called kuah cuko, T, Model, Celor Noodle, Laksan, Lakso, Sponge Kojol, Kemplang, Tempoyak, and Pindang Patin (pangasius in sweet and sour soup).
Indonesian Embassy Minister Counselor Boy Dharmawan said that Kompaq representatives from various cities such as Doha, Dukhan, Al Khor, Mesaieed and Wakrah were competing to show their skills in making dishes typical of Palembang. He added that the gathering will help foster brotherhood and unity among Indonesians in Qatar.
