CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Monday assured students that he would take up the issue of missing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmad and put pressure on the government to locate him. He also said it would not be “feasible” to expect the government to bring out the truth in the matter unless it was pressured.

“The government owes this explanation to people at large, not just JNU, that how it is possible in a democracy like ours that somebody goes missing and nobody knows the whereabouts of Najeeb whatsoever? This is unacceptable,” said Yechury, who was speaking at a march organised by the JNU students’ union (JNUSU) at Jantar Mantar.

“Today I met the President. You should also go to the Visitor and tell him that his intervention is necessary, because we have no faith in this government that they are going to bring out the truth,” he added.

Meanwhile, the JNU vice-chancellor met the Delhi Police commissioner to discuss the issue. The university, in a statement, said, “The commissioner said the police department has taken serious steps to find Najeeb Ahmed and has decided to increase the amount of reward for information from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000.”
