The spat between Akhilesh and Shivpal was over an article published in a national daily which termed Akhilesh as 'Aurangazeb' and Mulayam as 'Shahjahan'.

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will chair a core group meeting of the party on Monday evening, hours after the rift within the Yadav clan took a turn for the worse with an open spat between Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and state party president Shivpal Yadav.

The evening meet will be the party’s third gathering of the day after the first two failed to end the power struggle between Akhilesh and his uncle Shivpal, whom he ousted from his cabinet a day before.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav left father Mulayam Singh’s residence in the afternoon and met his supporters and asked them to not indulge in any sloganeering after the party chief sought action against sloganeers during the party meet.

A day after a series of revenge sackings within the Samajwadi Party, high drama ensued at the crucial meeting at SP office in Lucknow with Shivpal and Akhilesh having an open spat over Amar Singh and even trying to snatch the microphone from each other on the stage.

The spat between Akhilesh and Shivpal was over an article published in a national daily which termed Akhilesh as ‘Aurangazeb’ and Mulayam as ‘Shahjahan’.

Shivpal snatched the microphone from Akhilesh and told the crowd that the “chief minister is lying” after Akhilesh blamed Shivpal of conspiring with Amar Singh and MLC Ashu Malik in getting the article published.

The meeting of MPs, MLAs, MLCs and senior party leaders was called to resolve the current political crisis in the party.

Mulayam called the meeting a day after Akhilesh sacked Shivpal Yadav and three of his cabinet ministers who are loyalists of Shivpal.

Upset with Akhilesh’s decision, Ram Gopal Yadav (believed to be in the anti-Mulayam camp) was expelled from the party on Sunday by state president Shivpal Yadav.

According to Shivpal, the decision to sack Ram Gopal Yadav was taken after consultation with SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.

However, Akhilesh has made it clear many a times that he is with his father but is firm on a stern action against those, including Amar Singh (known to be close to Mulayam), indulging in “anti-party” activities.

In the evening, sacked minister Om Prakash said a truce had been reached between Mulayam, Akhilesh and Shivpal and that the chief minister might brief the media later in the day.
