On the sidelines of the MP Global Investors Summit, Arun Bharat Ram, Chairman, SRF Industries spoke about the chemical industry and the interconnection of the rural and agri-industry with the chemical industry. Excerpts

ET Now: How is the Agro-Chemical industry performing?
Arun Bharat Ram: In the chemical industry, we are seeing an upswing as far as agrochemicals is concerned because we believe that the good monsoons is definitely creating a demand pull from the agricultural sector and the sowing that is taking place now is going to require agrochemicals. On the other side, we are also seeing in another business of ours which is linked to the tyre industry that the demand is picking up in tyre cords because the movement of goods has started. This also reflected in the fact that there is a tremendous upsurge in the sale of commercial vehicles both heavy commercial vehicles and light commercial vehicles.

ET Now: Talking about the rural economy, have you seen the signs of picking up of the rural economy?
Arun Bharat Ram: Well, it takes a little bit of time before the actual demand starts picking up in the rural economy because right now if there is a pickup, it is more based on sentiment but when the real money comes in the hands of the farmers or the rural areas, which will a little further down the road because now the crops are being sown that will come up and we are going to see bumper crops in many areas.
