A Democratic National Committee (DNC) bus left more than a campaign message behind on a recent trip through Georgia: Bus operators also left sewage in a storm drain, winning the ire of locals.

The Washington Post called it the DNC’s “latest leak,” adding that “it’s not exactly the kind of October surprise of legend.”

“Police in Georgia say a bus chartered by the DNC was photographed dumping human waste into a storm drain. The incident happened ... in Lawrenceville, about 30 miles northeast of Atlanta, near where people were waiting in line for early voting,” Fox News reported.

“Police said they are working with local environmental officials to try to prevent the waste from entering the water supply. The person who opened the sewage line could face charges for illegal dumping,” the report continued.

The DNC put out a statement apologizing for the incident.

"This was an honest mistake and we apologize to the Lawrenceville community for any harm we may have caused," the statement said, per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We were unaware of any possible violations and have already taken corrective action with the charter bus company to prevent this from happening again. Furthermore, the DNC will work with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, as well as local and state officials to determine the best course of corrective action."

A police report said witnesses spotted the bus pulled up next to the storm drain, Fox News reported.

“Someone then got out of the bus and opened the sewage drain. The report goes on to state that a large amount of ‘drying toilet paper’ and a ‘foul smell’ was left behind,” the report said, noting that a witness contacted police.

A DNC spokesperson said the bus driver’s safety concerns motivated the decision, the report said.

“The DNC said the driver was concerned that driving further would put cars on the road at risk’” the report said.
