SURAT: A police sub-inspector (PSI) and four policemen of other ranks belonging to Gandevi police station in Navsari district were booked and later arrested on Saturday for allegedly registering a fabricated prohibition case to show that they were busy in a raid when a special team of inspector general of police, Surat range, stormed a gambling den there. This move comes after series of actions against some cops in Surat and Navsari for their alleged nexus with bootleggers in these two districts.
These five cops were suspended on Sunday.
D S Soni, PSI; Suresh Nanubhai, assistant sub-inspector (ASI); Shankar Thavrabhai, ASI; Amit Prakash and Ajay Mahadev, both constables, had allegedly fabricated a raid and showed seizure of liquor on June 1. These cops posted at Gandevi police station claimed a raid when the team of IGP, Surat range, stormed a gambling den at Khatriwad of Kaushik Faliya. "Over Rs 25,000 was recovered during the gambling raid and hence the cops planned and claimed liquor worth Rs 25,000 in the raid carried out by them. They wanted to show that they were busy when the IG's team raided a gambling den in their police station limits," said Shamsher Singh, IGP, Surat range. A recovery of Rs 28,680 was made in the gambling raid while in the fabricated liquor raid, the seizure was to the tune of Rs. 28,800.
"They wanted to escape the blame by claiming to be busy in some other activity to control crime. However, an inquiry by us proved that the liquor raid and seizure had been fabricated by them," added Singh.
"We have CCTV footages, call data records and statements of punch to show that the accused cops did not go out of the police station during the period of raid," Singh added.
