President Pranab Mukherjee: We must not convert diversity into uniformity

President Pranab Mukherjee said on Sunday , without making any direct reference to the ongoing controversy over uniform civil code, “We must not try to remove our diversity and artificially try to convert diversity into uniformity . That is not India's ethos. India has taught, since many many centuries, to celebrate diversity.“

GANDHINAGAR: President Pranab Mukherjee said on Sunday , without making any direct reference to the ongoing controversy over uniform civil code, “We must not try to remove our diversity and artificially try to convert diversity into uniformity . That is not India's ethos. India has taught, since many many centuries, to celebrate diversity.“
“We have gone through a great socio-economic transformation,“ said the President, adding, “Indian economy is growing fast.
What we see today is not the effort of last two years, but the efforts of last two-and-a-half decades.“
The President of India was speaking at a student event organised at Bapu Gujarat Knowledge Village in Gandhinagar by Shankersinh Vaghela, leader of opposition in Gujarat assembly , and senior Congress leader.Governor of Gujarat, O P Kohli, also attended the function.
The President said, “India has 1,800 dialects, 200 languages used in everyday life, 7 religions and 3 major ethnic groups. All diversity in life, food, culture, and dress is yet under one flag, one Constitution, one nation, and one system.“
“We have been able to converge this diversity because of our cultural liberalisation.It is because of our spirit that we me must celebrate diversity,“ said the President.
“In 1920s, Gandhiji established Gujarat Vidyapith and started an experiment which is still ongoing. Another experiment was done on the eastern side by Rabindranath Tagore by establishing Vishwabharati, where he inscribed that the whole universe li ves in oneness. That is the teaching of Indian scholars, philosophers and our leader,“ said the President. The President said, “Though we have a country of 1.28 billion, we are not on the list of 200 top universities in the world. To tap our demographic dividend we need to focus heavily on improving education quality and skills of our youth.“
