Police Commission to Jaffna on fact finding mission

The National Police Commission (NPC) is to send a team to Jaffna on a fact finding mission into the recent deaths of two Jaffna University students.

Commission secretary Ariyadasa Cooray said a team of officers from the NPC may visit Jaffna today but added the matter was under discussion.

The NPC’s fact finding mission is to be carried out in addition to the current investigations being conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Cooray yesterday stressed that it was the IGP’s responsibility to probe the case and file criminal charges in courts, if he deems it necessary, depending on the outcome of the investigation.

He said the NPC teams’ visit to Jaffna will only be a fact finding one, into the recent deaths of the two university students.

President Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday ordered officials to conduct an independent inquiry into the incident and produce a report to court without delay.

The President also said that compensation will be paid to the dead students’ parents.

Meanwhile, the five policemen arrested in relation to the incident were remanded by the Jaffna Magistrate till November 4.

Earlier, Jaffna police reported that the two Jaffna University students – riding a motorcycle - had crashed into a wall in the early hours last Friday (October 21), resulting in their deaths.
