Flying straight into the record books, Air India has just made a flight from Delhi, India to San Francisco,US over the Pacific Ocean with no brakes and no stops; a big break from its usual flight path which crosses the Atlantic Ocean.
The Pacific route which is 1,400km longer than the Atlantic route's 13,900km surpassed Emirates Airline's record Dubai - Auckland flight which is 14,120km.
Despite the flight taking a longer distance, it landed in San Francisco almost two hours earlier thanks to tailwinds which blew in the same direction as the aircraft thus propelling it toward its destination. The short flight time meant well for AI as the Boeing 777-200 long range used one the record flight burns through 9,600 litres of fuel per hour.
The four pilots - captains Rajneesh Sharma, Gautam Verma, MA Khan and SM Palekar; along with the rest of the cabin crew were all excited by news of what they have done.
On its return, the AI Delhi - San Francisco will have achieved a round trip around the world as it flies over the Atlantic Ocean amidst tailwinds.
