LDF lost a sitting seat in the byelection held to the Areekkad ward of the corporation.
LDF loses a seat in byelection
Kozhikode: LDF lost a sitting seat in the byelection held to the Areekkad ward of the corporation. IUML backed independent candidate S V Sayed Muhammad Shameel won the election by a margin of 416 votes by defeating T Moideen of the CPM.
The seat became vacant after CPM leader V K C Mammad Koya, who was the mayor, was elected to the Assembly. He had won the election defeating the same rival in the last elections with a margin of 202 votes.
Muhammed Shamil secured a total of 2231 votes while T Moideen of CPM bagged 1815 votes.
BJP candidate Anil Kumar got 390 votes. Independent candidate Moideen bagged 30 votes and Shameel (independent) got 23 votes. Another independent candidate Moideen Koya secured 22 votes.
The LDF is ruling the corporation with the support of 47 councillors.
The number of UDF councillors rose to 21 with the victory of IUML independent candidate from Areekkad ward. BJP has seven councillors in the corporation council.
