Fans of the original Winnipeg Jets can finally gloat after their retro players beat a lineup of classic Edmonton Oilers.

The Jets won 6-5, with Teemu Selanne racking up five points.

Hockey legends came to town for Saturday’s alumni game at Investors Group Field.

The NHL Heritage Classic has drawn around 8,000 visitors to Winnipeg for the weekend.

Fans started partying outside the stadium at around 10 a.m. decked out in retro gear and ready to relive hockey history

The rivalry has been holding strong for more than 30 years.

With legendary Jets like Dale Hawerchuk and Teemu Selanne, and Oilers like Marc Messier and Wayne Gretzky, it was a classic western hockey showdown.

“We're here every moment from today and until Tomorrow night, and we're not leaving," said Jets fan Edel Fuhr.

The legends hit the ice for the alumni game, and off the ice, some familiar faces joined the party.

"I was Benny the Jet, the mascot. I'm the longest serving mascot," said Paul Benson, who served as Benny from 1987 to 1992. Benson flew in from Kelowna, B.C. to relive the glory days.

"It's such a great experience to be back in the peg, and to be here for such a special event like this, I just love it, can't get enough,"

Benson isn't the only off-ice celebrity to fly in for the weekend. Jennifer Hanson, who sang the national anthem for the Jets in the 1990s, made the trip from Atlanta to sing in front of some familiar faces.

"It's such an incredible experience. I'm going to try not to cry, that's my biggest fear," said Hanson.

Around 34,000 cheering fans filled the stadium, celebrating a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"I never got to grow up to see these old timers, and it's quite cool to see them play now," said Kagan Preece.

“It's lots of memories. Memories that I've shared with my family watching hockey, it's awesome,” said Fuhr.

This is just the beginning of Heritage Classic weekend. A regular-season game between the Jets and Oilers is on tap for Sunday.

According to Ticketmaster, seats are still available for Sunday’s game.
