COIMBATORE: This September, the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies-CID (CS-CID) police officials, for the first time in the history of the department, appointed 10 women police inspectors. Strangely, the director general of police (DGP) has ordered to transf the women officers from the CS-CID, to appoint men inspectors instead.
The 10 women inspectors were appointed to the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC), North Zone, West Zone, Salem city and greater Chennai police.
"We took charge as inspector of police at the CS-CID in Chennai and other districts. But now the DGP has transferred us to units in North and West zones. We don't know why the police department thinks that women inspectors are not to fit to serve in the CS-CID," said one of the women inspectors.
Last month, 180 women sub-inspectors from the 2004 batch were promoted the post of inspectors of police. Of these, 10 women inspectors were promoted on September 22 and posted at the CS-CID department by DGP T K Rajendran. But the CS-CID department has been against the move from the very beginning and had put the transfer on hold.
Senior CS-CID officials stated that they prefer male inspectors for the post, as so "has been the practise since 1964", the year department was formed.
TOI had published the news in the first week of October, following which the 10 women inspectors were ordered to appear before CS-CID DGP K Radhakrishnan on October 5 and posted in the CS-CID, where they worked for about 10 days, before the recent revelations.
As of October 18, DGP TK Rajendran transferred the 10 women inspectors to other units and districts, and appointed 10 male inspectors to fill in their positions at the CS-CID.

Woman inspector M Manjula was repatriated from the CS-CID and transferred to the Greater Chennai police. N Manimegalai and K Punitha were also repatriated from the CS-CID, Chennai and posted to the DVAC. R Dheivarani was posted to crime, Chennai. M Amutha, S Karpagam, SC Hemalatha, A Ponnammal were posted to the West Zone and K Krishnaveni was posted to the North Zone. S Valarmathi was transferred to the Salem city police. The state DGP has also requested the CS-CID DGP to issue necessary orders and inform the date of release to the chief office.
"Women have been successful in several sectors in the country. So denying us an opportunity to work with CS-CID, on the grounds of us being women is just absurd," one of the women inspectors said on condition of anonymity.
