A 37-year-old murder convict died of an illness at Tihar Jail Friday afternoon. According to officials, a magisterial inquiry has been initiated into the death. The man’s family, meanwhile, staged a protest near Welcome police station, alleging foul play.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Tihar Jail, Mukesh Prasad said the deceased was identified as Sirajuddin, who was serving his sentence after being convicted in a murder case since 2009.
Watch what else is making news:
“The incident came to light on October 21 at 12 pm after the superintendents of jail no 8 and 9 were informed that Sirajuddin had fallen ill. He was lodged in Central Jail no 9 and was suffering from diabetes and heart disease. Local police were informed and magisterial inquiry was initiated,” he added.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Sirajuddin was suffering from a heart ailment. “On Friday afternoon, his condition deteriorated and fellow prisoners informed the jail authorities. He was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead,” said the officer.
To rule out foul play, jail authorities have sought a postmortem examination of the deceased by a medical board at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. Jail officials said Sirajuddin’s elder brother is also lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with the murder case. He was informed about his death.
Sirajuddin’s family members alleged that police are trying to hide the exact reason of his death from them.
