The Taoiseach has said that the Government's approach to voting on the AAA-PBP motion on repealing the Eighth Amendment will be dealt with on Tuesday.

Enda Kenny said the Citizens’ Assembly is due to report back on the Eighth Amendment in June 2017 and that the AAA-PBP bill cuts across this process.

Mr Kenny was speaking ahead of Fine Gael's annual presidential dinner in Dublin this evening.

The Taoiseach added that the Citizens' Assembly should be allowed to do its work and report to the Oireachtas.

When a similar bill on fatal foetal abnormalities was tabled in the Dáil a few months ago, the Independent Alliance had a free vote. This caused friction within the Government as Fine Gael had opposed the bill.

Eighth Amendment definition

It had been reported last week that the Independent Alliance is seeking a counter motion which would provide a time limit for the Citizens' Assembly to address the matter and also, ultimately, for a free Dáil vote on it when the vote is taken.

Earlier today Gerry Adams said Sinn Féin would support the bill and that a whip would be imposed.

Fianna Fáil has said TDs will have a free vote on the bill, while Labour has said it will be supporting it.

Last year, Sinn Féin abstained on a similar bill put forward by Independents4Change TD Clare Daly.

Mr Adams said the party's position was subsequently agreed at the Ard Fheis.

Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín was previously suspended from the party for six months when he voted against the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill.
