5. Q.1. ‘X 1997’ is a song by Elton John, a re-written and re-recorded
version of his 1973 song X. It was released on 13 September 1997
as a tribute single to Y with the global proceeds from the song
going towards Y's charities. It is the second best-selling single of
all time.
The 1997 version won John the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop
Vocal Performance.
The lyrics of the earlier version of X written by Bernie Taupin, were
a tribute to Z who died in 1962. The opening lines of the 1973
version, "Goodbye Norma Jeane, though I never knew you at all,"
were adapted to "Goodbye England's rose, may you ever grow in
our hearts." Most of the lyrics were adapted to suit Y, but a notable
omission, which needed no adaptation, was the line, "Even when
you died, the press still hounded you." which was replaced with the
lyric, "Even though we try, the truth brings us to tears.“

8. Q.2. X is a pop song that originated as the jingle in the
groundbreaking 1971 "Hilltop" television commercial for Y. The
ad was produced by Billy Davis and portrayed a positive
message of hope and love, featuring a multicultural collection
of teenagers on top of a hill appearing to sing the song.
The song became so popular that it was recorded by The New
Seekers and by The Hillside Singers as a full-length song—
without the mention of Y—and both versions became huge
hits.
The commercial was used as the final scene in the Mad
Men series finale, "Person to Person" which was set in
November 1970, at an oceanside spiritual retreat in California.

11. Q.3. One of the most memorable songs in Bollywood history, X, from
the movie Guide, was sung by Asha Bhosle and written by
Shailendra with SD Burman as the music director.
Going by the theme of the movie, the song was shot at Chittorgarh
Fort. In fact, the reflection of the heroine on one of those mirrors
during the song, is inspired from the legendary tale of Alauddin Khilji
catching a glimpse of Queen Padmini on the same mirror in the
main hall.

17. Q.5. The nephew of Pt. Ravi Shankar was a
Bengali musician best known for fusing
Western and Eastern musical styles. In the
late ‘60s he travelled to Los Angeles, where
he played with the likes of Jimi Hendrix.

first self-titled album in 1970, featuring original
Indian classical material alongside
psychedelic, sitar-based cover versions of
popular hits such as The Rolling Stones’
Jumpin’ Jack Flash and The Doors’ Light My

be made for less than a million; it was written and re-written 105
times by the lyricist, Shakeel Badayuni, before the music
director, Naushad, could approve of it. In those days of sound
recording, editing and mixing, as there was no way to provide
the reverberation of sound which was essential for the
song, Naushad had Lata Mangeshkar sing the song in a studio
bathroom.

the supergroup United Support of Artists (USA) for Africa in
1985. It was written by Y and Lionel Richie and produced
by Quincy Jones.
Before the writing of X, American entertainer and social
activist Harry Belafonte had sought for some time to have a
song recorded by the most famous artists in the music
industry at the time. He planned to have the proceeds
donated to a new organization called United Support of
Artists for Africa (USA for Africa). The non-profit foundation
would then feed and relieve starving people in Africa,
specifically Ethiopia, where around one million people died
during the country's 1983–85 famine.
X was again recorded 25 years later in 2010 by over 80
artists, for a similar purpose, something that happened the
same year.

by Asha Bhosle. The song was picturized on Zeenat Aman,
written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Rahul Dev Burman. It
was originally intended to be a duet, with Lata
Mangeshkar singing for the "good girl", and Usha Uthup singing
for the "bad girl". However, due to some changes, the song
ended up being a solo sung by Asha Bhosle. The song was a hit
in the 1970s, and gained cult status in India.

singing Ram Ka Naam Badnaam Na Karo sung by Kishore
Kumar.

49. Q.15. X is a song written primarily by John Lennon for the
Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Lennon's son Julian inspired the song with a nursery school
drawing he called X. Shortly after the song's release,
speculation arose that the first letter of each of the title nouns
intentionally spelled LSD. Lennon consistently denied
this, insisting the song was inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in
Wonderland books, a claim repeatedly confirmed by Paul
McCartney.

directed by Gulzar, who also wrote the song. The song was
composed by R D Burman and sung by Asha Bhosle.
The song remains one of Asha Bhosle's most popular, and

Even at the time of its release the song was noted, and
even "ahead of its times", for its unusual non-rhyming lyrics
in free verse, and for blurring the line between poem and
lyric. When Gulzar first showed the non-rhyming lyrics to RD
Burman, he jokingly complained that Gulzar would next ask
him to set a newspaper headline to music.
Asha Bhosle won the National Film Award for Best Female
Playback Singer for her rendition of the song,
and Gulzar won the National Film Award for Best Lyrics.

Urdu languages. He was also a renowned film lyricist in Hindi
films, where he won the Filmfare Awards for Best Lyricist twice.
In 1940, he came to Bombay, and started working as a bus
conductor, earning a monthly salary of eleven rupees. He used to
participate in mushairas. At a mushaira, Prithviraj Kapoor noticed
him and recommended him to his son, Raj Kapoor, who was
planning a musical love story, Barsaat (1949) with Shankar-
Jaikishan. X wrote his first recorded song, Jiya Beqaraar Hai for
the film.
Along with Shailendra, X wrote lyrics for all Raj Kapoor films till
1971.

Badan Pe Sitare Lapete Hue, Bol Radha Bol Sangam Hoga Ki
Nahin, Aao Twist Karein, Baharon Phool Barsao.

58. Q.18. X is a 1980 Indian Hindi song composed by Biddu and was
sung by the Pakistani pop singer, Nazia Hassan. It was Nazia's first
song. The song was featured in the film as an item number.
Biddu agreed to work in the film with two conditions. The first condition
was the song would be recorded in London and not Bombay. The
second condition was he would not to use any playback singer from
India. Feroz Khan gave in to the conditions immediately. This meant
that the music directors in Bombay would be furious at Feroz for
agreeing to work with a outsider.
X became a superhit song in India and overseas and the film a hit at
the box office. The singer of this song Nazia Hassan, gained overnight
fame in India and also became famous in her own country, Pakistan,
due to this song. It marked for the first time that a Pakistani singer
sang for India. The song became so popular, that Nazia, despite being
a Pakistani, won a Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback
Singer for this song in 1981. She set the record for being the youngest
recipient of the award at the age of 15.

remixed by Panjabi MC in 1999, produced in United
Kingdom for the album Legalised. Following its re-release as a

highly in many other countries.
