NOIDA: Uttar Pradesh Police and some officers of the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) have been freely speculating about a Naxalite-terrorist nexus ever since they busted a Maoist hideout in Noida on October 15, but a week into their investigation, they are yet to find any proof to back those claims.
ATS officials’ eagerness to go to town with the October 15 ‘prize’ catch is also at odds with a statement from Bihar Police, denying that any of the four alleged Maoist operatives from the state picked up in Noida that day had a Naxalite connection.

The ATS subsequently arrested two more suspected Maoist operatives from Bihar — Dharamveer Singh and Sipahi Ram — citing phone records to prove their Naxalite activities. But the scanner has also fallen on the ATS probe.
Anoop Singh, deputy superintendent of the ATS (western UP), admitted there was no proof yet of the Maoist-terrorist nexus, but put up a brave face. “The Maoists were getting illegal weapons from Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh. They wanted to sell these weapons to some terror outfits for money,” he said on Friday.
“However, we don’t have any evidence to show that they had done such things in the past. Our investigation is still on,” Singh added.
The ATS had arrested nine persons from two hideouts in Noida on the night of October 15, among them Pradeep Kumar Singh, an ‘area commander’ from Latehar who was holed up at a flat in Hindon Vihar. Following their interrogation, it raided the house of their alleged mastermind, Sunil Ravidas, in Chandauli and arrested him. Officers claimed the suspects were planning robberies, abductions and ATM heists in NCR to raise funds.
The arrested men have been booked under Section 122 (amassing weapons) and Section 121-A (conspiring to wage war against the country) of the IPC. A charge sheet will be filed against them soon, an ATS officer said.
The ATS claims to have seized 45 gelatin rods (each 200 grams), 125 detonators, three .32 bore pistols, one 9 mm pistol, three country-made revolvers, one Insas rifle, 88 cartridges, two laptops, 13 mobile phones, four cars and one bike from the arrested men. “We are questioning the suspects about their activities, modus operandi and networks. We are collecting concrete evidences and we will break their network,” said an ATS official.
