THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Directing all police stations in the state to implement a green protocol, the state police chief on Friday issued a set of guidelines for effective waste management and maintenance of clean and hygienic surroundings. The protocol, to be adopted in all offices under the department, will be implemented with the support of the Suchitwa Mission.
The guidelines say that stations and offices should not burn plastic waste and should ensure proper treatment of food leftovers.
“Employees should bring lunch and other snack items in reusable tiffin boxes, avoiding disposable glasses and plastics, and the leftovers should be put in separate waste bins kept for the purpose. The waste thus collected should be shifted to biogas plants or composting units, for which Suchitwa Mission will provide the technical assistance,“ the instructions say.
There should be a total ban on the use of plastic cups and plates and water bottles should be discouraged. Food brought from outside for functions should be served in reusable plates, the circular said.
Secret documents that are no longer needed should be destroyed using shredder machines. Other paper, electronic and plastic waste generated should be segregated before being handed over for disposal.
The DGP also directed holding of awareness classes and seminars for the staff. All zonal ADGPs, IGs and district police chiefs should ensure that the guidelines are strictly followed. They should also carry out monthly inspections and send reports to the police chief.
