Nagpur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis held a brainstorming session on Thursday night with around 60 office bearers of BJP’s South-West constituency unit to plan strategy for municipal elections 2017.
The meet went on from 9pm to 12.30am on Thursday night at his official residence Varsha in Mumbai. City BJP president Sudhakar Kohle, president of BJP’s SW constituency unit Prakash Bhoyar, vice-president Narayan Ahuja and others were present.
Interestingly, BJP corporators from SW constituency were not invited.
“The CM is a little worried about OBC voters in his constituency. He asked party workers to build confidence about BJP among OBC voters, citing the slew of development projects undertaken and planned in the city. He stressed on the need to highlight cement concrete road projects etc among the people. He also said corporators from SW Constituency had been given special funds and should ensure all works are done soon,” sources said.
Bhoyar said they want to win 22-23 of the 25 seats in SW constituency. “The CM and union minister Nitin Gadkari have undertaken many big projects, which are about to change the face of the city. Party workers will take these projects to the people and seek support for BJP once again in NMC,” he said.
In 2012 municipal elections, BJP and Congress were neck-to-neck in SW constituency. In the new ward system, six wards fall in this constituency — 35, 36, 37, 38, 13 and 16, comprising 23 corporators. Some parts of two more wards fall in SW constituency, but maximum spread is across West Nagpur and South Nagpur constituencies.
Two senior Congress leaders — Vikas Thakre and Praful Gudadhe — reside in this area and are also corporators from SW constituency. Therefore, it is a challenge for the BJP to win more seats than the Congress here.
Fadnavis spoke to all BJP leaders and workers from SW constituency at length and had dinner with them. “Party leaders and workers were delighted and boosted by the CM’s interaction,” said a BJP leader.
