15.45 lakh unaccounted money seized in Thanjavur

The flying squad has seized Rs15.45lakh from a timber merchant from Coimbatore near Vallam check-post in Thanjavur district, as he was unable to produce valid documents to explain the cash he possessed, on Friday.

THANJAVUR: The flying squad has seized Rs15.45lakh from a timber merchant from Coimbatore near Vallam check-post in Thanjavur district, as he was unable to produce valid documents to explain the cash he possessed, on Friday.
With the model code being imposed ahead of the November 19 poll, Thanjavur revenue officials were conducting vehicle checks to curb violations. The flying squad team, headed by deputy tahsildar Kannan, inspected a car from Coimbatore going towards Puducherry.
During the check, they found cash worth Rs 15.45 lakh. They questioned Mohammed Sajid, 32, who was at the wheel and found he was a timber merchant based in Sulur. He was unable to submit any valid documents to explain the cash he possessed. Consequently, the officials seized the money from him and sent it to the district treasury. Karur district collector K Govidaraj convened a meeting at the Aravakuruchi tahsildar office to discuss the enforcement of the model code of conduct ahead of the scheduled assembly poll in Aravakuruchi. tnn
