Luka Modric could play Paul Scholes role for Man United - Ryan Giggs

Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United should try to sign Real Madrid's Luka Modric to play the "Paul Scholes" role in the team's midfield.

Former United star and assistant manager Giggs has called Modric his "favourite" player of Croatia's talented generation of international players and feels the 31-year-old is similar to his one-time teammate Scholes.

Modric recently signed a new contract with Real that runs until 2020 and the midfielder has said he wants to end his career with the club he has won two Champions Leagues, two European Supercups, the World Club Cup and one Copa del Rey since joining from Tottenham for €30 million in 2012.

But given the chance, Giggs said he'd love to see the brass at Old Trafford make a move for the veteran playmaker.

"Today Croatia is strong, with Mario Mandzukic, Ivan Rakitic and Luka Modric -- he is my favourite," Giggs told reporters at a UEFA event in Zagreb.

"For me Modric is the real successor to Paul Scholes. I would be happy if he was to come to United.

"They are very similar players and if it was up to me I would bring him to United."
