The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), which played a major role in the formation of the state, is now focusing on the Assembly segments in the plains to strengthen its base.

For the upcoming Assembly elections, the UKD-Progressive is focusing on Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, which accounts for more than 20 seats.

UKD-P media committee secretary Uday Ram Semwal today said the party had set a target of winning at least two Assembly seats in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts. He added the party had already finalised candidates while the final list for the rest of the segments was in the last phase.

The district and Assembly-level committees are being mobilised in plain segments with a major focus on those segments where the party had fielded its candidates in the 2012 Assembly elections.

The revival of the UKD was imperative for the future of Uttarakhand as it was the only party which played a major role in the formation of the hill state, he added.

The BJP and the Congress had been in power since the formation of the state while the UKD got divided into various folds, he said. “Still, the people of the state want to see the UKD in power as the party caters to the needs of local people,” he said.

On the prospects of unification among UKD-Airy and UKD-Progressive factions led by Kashi Singh Airi, Pushpesh Tripathi and Trivendra Singh Pawar, respectively, Uday Ram said UKD (A) leaders want only power and had no concern for parental UKD and people of the state, so there was no point of merger.

Terming the apex court’s decision to vacate government houses allocated to former Chief Ministers, Semwal said this itself pointed out towards the hungry attitude of BJP and Congress leaders.

Leaders of the Congress, BJP, BSP, Samajwadi Party and Progressive Democratic Front wanted government facilities, red beacons and status but were not bothered about the woes of the people of the state, he added.
