The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has dropped the attempt-to-murder charge against five Jat youths who allegedly threw ink on BJP MP Raj Kumar Saini.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Simardeep Singh said the medical examination report of the MP did not hint at any injury on or around his neck.

An interim report of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Madhuban, concluded that an oil-like substance splashed on Saini was not acidic or alkaline.

“The two reports were studied thoroughly. It was concluded that the charge of attempt to murder was inappropriate. The material splashed on the MP was not dangerous. We will scrap Sections 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC,” the SP told The Tribune.

“The FSL is yet to furnish detailed reports about the substance thrown on Saini and whether or not it was inflammable,” he said.

Mukesh Verma, president of Mairh, Kshatrya, Sunar Dharamshala, was a complainant in the case.

On October 16, Saini was roughed up by a group of youths at a dharamshala here. The accused were later identified as residents of Budhana village in Hisar district.

Saini has been alleging that it was a calculated attack on his life for his stand against Jat reservation. He alleged that members of an Opposition party were instrumental in the attack.

Several Jat organisations, khap panchayats and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) protested against invoking a stringent charge (Section 307) against the accused. Of five accused, three have a criminal past. All of them are lodged in the district jail.

Saini and Verma could not be contacted in spite of repeated attempts.

Earlier in Chandigarh, about 100 Jat and khap leaders met KP Singh, DGP, Haryana, and demanded scrapping of the case registered under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC against five Jat youths. They demanded action against Saini and also threatened to launch an agitation if the police failed to provide justice.
