CHENNAI: Thirteen inmates lodged in the Puzhal central prison on charges of murdering a Hindu Munani functionary went on a fast on Friday morning as they claimed that there was a move to shift the case from the Tiruvallur court to that in Poonamallee.
The prisoners demanded a fast-track court to try and grant them bail. They said they were not involved in the murder and urged the authorities to arrest the real offender.
The prisoners shouted slogans and refused food and said their families were suffering for no fault of theirs.
The inmates urged the jail officials to convey their demand for setting up a fast-track court at the earliest to the authorities concerned.
Tension prevailed for over three hours as the prisoners refused to go back to their cells.
Only after jail officials convinced them that their demands would be looked into did they disperse and have their food.
