One injured in Lucknow university student violence, police deployed

A student was injured and several rounds were fired in air when two groups clashed near Habibullah hostel of the Lucknow University (LU) on Friday.

LUCKNOW: A student was injured and several rounds were fired in air when two groups clashed near Habibullah hostel of the Lucknow University (LU) on Friday.
Hostellers later staged protests demanding action against guilty, forcing authorities to deploy PAC around hostels to maintain peace. LU proctorial office suspended MA student Amrit Mishra accused of firing and sealed two rooms at Habibullah hostel.
FIR has also been lodged against 25 students.
According to police, one Salman along with Amrit Mishra and Sashikant Pathak, both residents of Habibullah hostel, and 25 others thrashed Saurabh with the butt of a gun. Saurabh's supporters also rushed to the spot, but the rival group fired several rounds in the air with country made pistol and fled.
The two groups, hostelers told police, are at loggerheads since long and are fighting for supremacy on the campus with an eye of the students union elections. Teachers who have residences on the campus said that the clash came as a reminder of the violence which used to take place on the campus before 2007 when student union elections were stayed by the court.
“A professor residing near the Habibullah hostel informed the proctorial board about students clash and firing. The team reached the hostel immediately to take control of the situation,” said proctorial board member on Upadhyay.
The injured student was taken to Vivekananda Hospital and was discharged after the first aid, he added. Police was also called which conducted a march on the campus and PAC was deployed.
Students of Habibullah hostel, also staged a protest near the administrative block during the day to take action against the illegal hostel occupants responsible for indiscipline and those involved in the clash. They relented after vice chancellor assured them about action.
LU police outpost incharge, Rudra Pratap Tripathi said that an FIR against three students identified as Amrit Mishra, Salman, Sashikant Pathak and 25 unidentified has been lodged under charges of rioting, unlawful assembly, trespassing, attempt to murder, causing hurt, provoke breach of peace, intimidation and 7 Criminal Law Amendment Act.
