As part of his ramped-up public relations campaign, House Speaker Paul Ryan is warning in a video released Friday that elected leaders are running the risk of leaving the United States in worse shape for future generation if they continue to avoid tackling the nation’s biggest problems.
Mr. Ryan recently distanced himself from GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump and has since been trying to put his stamp on the Nov. 8 election by touting his “Better Way” agenda — hoping it helps protect the GOP majorities in the House and the Senate.
“Every single generation of Americans has always left the next generation better off, but now we know that may not be the case,” Mr. Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, says in the video. “Now we know if we stay on the path that we are on, we will undoubtedly for sure give the next generation a lower quality of life and an inferior standard of living.
“We have never done that before,” he said. “So the stakes are as high as they have ever been in this country.”
The “Better War” agenda addresses poverty, national security, and the economy, as well as health care, tax reform and an adherence to the Constitution.
“We see this as a make-or-break time for America, and the good news about this agenda is if we tackle our problems today we can do it fine, we can do it on our own terms as a country,” Mr. Ryan says. “But if we keep kicking the can down the road the problems will get worse and the solutions will not be pleasant.”
