41 sheds catch fire near Rameshwaram, net loss close to Rs 40 lakh
It is suspected that the strong winds in the region due to depression like formation in the Indian Ocean might have triggered the fire.
As many as 41 sheds, containing essential fishing materials, caught fire on Thursday night at Pamban, near Rameshwaram.
According to sources, the estimated loss, including the nets and close to 1000 litres of diesel, is around Rs 40 lakh.
"These kind of incident have been happening a lot these days. Last month in the middle of the sea also a boat caught fire. We request that the government help us with some solution for these incidents," Patrick, Pamban former local body chief.
Today, the Ramanathapuram collector S Natrajan reached the spot to inspect the situation and has also taken note of the loss.
While the detailed investigation on the incident is yet to ascertain the cause of the fire, it is suspected that the strong winds in the region due to depression like formation in the Indian Ocean might have triggered the fire.
These sheds are mainly used for cold storage of fish caught by the fishermen and also to store essential fishing materials like net, diesel etc.
