TRICHY: A flying squad of the Election Commission on Friday seized Rs 15.45 lakh from a timber merchant at Vallam checkpost in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu.
According to officials, the flying squad was checking vehicles to curb poll code violations. Election will be held in Thanjavur assembly constituency on November 19.
The squad inspected a car driven by Mohammed Sajid, 32, of Sulur in Coimbatore, a timber merchant.
The squad found currency notes worth Rs 15.45 lakh in the car. Inquiries revealed that he was proceeding to Puducherry to purchase timber. However, he could not produce valid documents.
The election was necessitated after the Election Commission of India rescinded the polls in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi assembly constituencies in May in the wake of large scale distribution of money and gifts to the voters by candidates.
