The mayor of Bristol is investigating complaints about a busy commuter route that has been made one-way for the Metrobus project.

Stoke Lane will be kept one-way for 12 months, leaving drivers to face a two-mile diversion via the A4174 ring road.

Labour mayor Marvin Rees said: "What we've got to do, is work with residents to make sure people feel respected and heard."

He added he was going to speak to residents and explore possible options.

'Sense of hope'

Residents have called for a two-way traffic light system to help alleviate the situation.

Amanda Vinall, from the Stoke Lane Action Group, said: "If they say they're going to make it two-way with traffic lights then we would accept that and if it takes longer, it takes longer, it can't be as bad as it is now."

"It's been reviewed many times, they have done their traffic modelling, they have admitted they've got it wrong," she added.

"We've got the results of the traffic modelling which is saying it isn't doing what they said it would do and guess what? We told them that back in April."

Mr Rees said: "I don't know if there is an easy way out of this, it was always going to disrupt life in Bristol, but people need a sense of hope that this will come to an end."
