You might get to WhatsApp or surf through Facebook when you are on Air India’s flight the next time. It is suggested that Air India is initiating talks with BSNL to install wi-fi on its aircraft and an estimate cost for it. The airline has also started talks with some international onboard internet providers, reports TOI.
Air India chief Ashwani Lohani after meeting his BSNL counterpart Anupam Srivastava said that the airline is interested in installing internet on board as the carrier opeartes the longest flights out of India and the facility is provided by other leading airlines. However, feasebility and the cost will be the key factors in arriving at this decision.
AI had two years ago approached Geneva-based OnAir, which provides both internet and mobile connectivity. But AI was told that India had rules which needed a local server for airlines wishing to provide internet. Plus the cost was too high, reports TOI.
