AURANGABAD: After evading arrest for six months, the former director of the Millenium
Institute of Management (
MIM) on
Rafiq Zakaria campus was finally arrested by the City Chowk police on Thursday morning.
A local court remanded the accused, identified as
Shaikh Saleem Shaikh Chand of
Rauza Baugh, in judicial custody.
Based on a complaint lodged by Rafiq Zakaria campus secretary
Maqdoom Farooqui, on April 12, a case was registered Shaikh and his subordinate at the institute for cheating and dishonesty inducing delivery of property, forgery of valuable security, forgery for purpose of cheating, using as genuine a forged document or electronic record, criminal breach of trust and for common intention.
As per the complaint, Shaikh while serving as the director of MIM committed hefty misappropriation of funds with the help of a subordinate.
The complaint states that Shaikh formatted the computer and wiped out the data of transactions carried out in the institute for a period of about one decade. The misappropriation of funds came to light during an internal audit carried out with the help of a private firm.
The complaint further states that the former director printed forged receipt book and would collect fees from students, who in return were given receipts from these forged receipt books.
Taking cognizance of different complaints lodged against Shaikh, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University had withdrawn the recognition given to him as director of MIM on March 28. The development was followed by the Maualana Azad Educational Trust terminating him from the service on the charges of misappropriation of funds.
Shaikh had tried all leagal means to avoid his arrest, including approaching approaching the Supreme Court for bail, police said.
Assistant inspector Arjun Pawar said, "The accused has been remanded in judicial custody and was sent to Aurangabad Central Prison.
