NASHIK: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has taken over the murder case of a tribal person from Ghoti from police. The incident took place on Wednesday evening.
The decideased, Balu Khodke (26), was cremated in his native Khed Bhairav village in Igatpuri taluka, about 80km from here, on Thursday. In the meantime, the two policemen, who allegedly killed Khodke, have been also hospitalised.
According to the Ghoti Police, police constables Sunil Charoskar and Sandeep Zalte were on their duty on Wednesday evening when they saw a scuffle between two persons, one of them being Khodke.
Their attempt to resolve the issue led to Khodke falling on the ground and being hit in the head, following which he died.
However, as per the complaint lodged by Dattu Dagle, who was with the deceased on Wednesday, said he and Khodke were talking on the road when the two constables asked them the reason why they were roaming around and started beating them up.
Ankush Shinde, superintendent of police (Nashik rural), said, "We are investigating the case as per the complaint lodged against the two police personnel. The body of the deceased was also sent to the medical board in Dhule for post-mortem. In certain sensitive cases, the post-mortem is conducted by the medical board."
"Moreover, the case has also been handed over to the CID," he added.
The two constables, who suffered injuries in the attack by the villagers after Khodke's death, are in the hospital at present. Citing threat to their lives, police officials refused to reveal the hospital where the two police personnel have been kept.
On Wednesday, the villagers blamed the two policemen for Khodke's death and held them in custody till 9pm. Charoskar and Zalte were rescued by a police force called from the neighbouring areas.
The villagers claimed that police beat up Khodke fatally. "Police were trying to hush up the matter, but the villagers were firm on their demand for strict action against the constables. The villagers refused to take Khodke's body till a case was registered," Dagle had said earlier.
