GUWAHATI: Kaziranga National Park authorities are gearing up to receive Vice-President Hamid Ansari, who will be visiting the World Heritage Site next week.
A senior park official said the Vice-President will arrive at Kaziranga on October 26 and will go on a jungle safari the following day. The official said Ansari is expected to visit the Kohora forest range located in the central part of Kaziranga.
Security arrangements are being tightened before the visit.
"All our focus is now on preparing for the Vice-President's visit," the official added. However, park officials were tightlipped about other details of the visit.
This is the second high-profile visit to the park this year, after the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Princess Catherine, in April this year.
Home to almost two-third of world's one-horned rhino population, the 430-sq km Kaziranga was thrown open to tourists this month, a break from its tradition of opening the park in November.
In the meantime, park officials have launched a massive search operation inside the part after the firing at Kohora range on Wednesday.
"We heard gunfire near the Naobhangi anti-poaching camp under Kohora range at around 10.30pm. Our staff has been searching the area but there has been no trace of a rhino carcass yet," another park official said.
