Subways in New Delhi area are all set to be turned into bright creative expressions. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has partnered with Delhi Street Art to add a dash of colour and creativity to the walls of the Sansad Marg pedestrian subway in Connaught Place.

It will now be called the 'Yoga Subway' with huge paintings depicting various Yoga postures and an instructor deputed 24x7 to teach those interested.

Pedestrians often give subways a miss due to lack of lighting, bad smells, drug addicts and squatting. With this move, the NDMC hopes to give the subway facilities - revamped during the multicrore Connaught Place Redevelopment Project - a facelift.

"Jaywalking on roads leads to accidents every few days and our subway infrastructure becomes more and more unviable with no use," said a senior official. "So we have decided to make them attractive," he added.

Artists from Delhi Street Art have created a series of wall art panels depicting various yoga postures. Each posture is in the backdrop of a Delhi landmark or a historical monument such as Jantar Mantar, Barakhamba Road, etc.

The selection of yoga poses was based on the Common Yoga Principles outlined by the Ayush Ministry. These include Anantasana, Dandasana, Uttanasana, etc. All these art works were successfully exhibited as part of the International Yoga Day celebrations in Connaught Place.

"Sansad Marg has been turned into a public art gallery. Art is an essential component of public life in the city and must be promoted to make commuters' daily life slightly easier. People can now pause from the hustle and bustle of the streets and maybe take back a creative impression with them," said an official.

NDMC is also working on putting up panels of paintings depicting the history of six landmarks in its area - Pallika Kendra, India Gate, Connaught Place, Parliament House, North and South Blocks and Jantar Mantar - in its other subways. There will be old maps, photographs and history related to the evolution of these sites to excite history buffs. These will be akin to the panels put up on Mandi House Metro Station.
