Congress MLA attends Punjab’s 50-year celebrations despite Captain’s ‘opposition’

As he was among the dignitaries, Sadiq’s name was also announced by Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema. Sadiq was seated in the VIP area at Guru Nanak Stadium with Badal with SAD leaders. He attended the cultural programme organised by the education department till the end and also appreciated the efforts put in by the schoolchildren. Sadiq told The Indian Express that he had “done no crime in attending the celebrations, which were held for Punjab. “Why can’t we be happy if some celebrations are being held for the state? Punjab is not mine, yours or someone else’s personal property. I did no crime in attending the celebrations, which were for Punjab,” said Sadiq. Asked if he was invited by the SAD-BJP government, he claimed, “Yes, I went as I received an invitation.”

However, Education Minister Daljeet Singh Cheema said, “We did not send any formal invite to him but he is a Punjabi artiste and his daughter is also a teacher. Being an MLA, it was our duty to announce his name if he was present. He liked the event and agreed to stay till it ended,” said Cheema. Sadiq said, “There was nothing political in my attending the celebrations. I attended because I wanted to. I do not see any issues in celebrating Punjab’s 50th anniversary.”
