The calibre of the firearm found at the residence of former corporator Razzak Khan prima facie matched that of the bullet that killed Vakola resident Bhupendra Vira, police said Thursday.
Khan and his son Amjad have been arrested for the murder, and the latter allegedly confessed late Wednesday that he had shot Vira and hidden the firearm at their Vakola residence.
The Mumbai Police Crime Branch, which is probing the case, is now checking if there was anyone else involved in the murder apart from the duo.
Vira was shot dead on the night of October 15 at his Vakola home while he was watching TV. The police had arrested Khan and his son Amjad for allegedly plotting the murder.
The police said several Right to Information applications filed by Vira seeking documents on alleged illegal constructions by Khan had led to the suspects planning the murder.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjay Saxena said, “It does appear that the calibre of the firearm matches the bullet that was fired. We will, however, be waiting for the forensic report that will confirm the same.”
He added, “While Amjad has said it was he who pulled the trigger on Vira, our probe continues to get evidence for the same.”
An officer said the firearm they found at the Khan residence was a sophisticated country-made revolver. When the police asked Amjad about why he had a firearm, the latter said since he was in the oil business and travelled often, someone had “gifted” it to him for his security. “He says that the unlicenced firearm has been with him for years now and this is the first time he decided to use it,” said the officer.
Crime Branch sources said while one person had earlier claimed to have seen Amjad near Vira’s residence, they were asking more people in the locality if Amjad was spotted there on October 15 night. The police are also checking mobile phone records and CCTV cameras in the area to see if more evidence could be found against Amjad.
