Farmers get back Singur land
A decade after Singur land was acquired for Tata’s Nano small car project, the wheel turned a full circle on Thursday with the revival of farming. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee handed over physical possession of land to farmers and even kick started farming process by sprinkling mustard seeds on the land.

The state agriculture department has reportedly decided that the first set of crops to be cultivated on the Singur land will be mustard and pulses.

On Thursday, Mamata assured farmers that physical distribution of all land would be completed by November 10 keeping in mind the Supreme Court diktat of August 31. “We have readied at least 90 per cent of the 997 acres of land and will ensure the land distribution is completed by November 10,” the CM said after she sprinkled mustard seeds on a farmland.

On Thursday, she completed handover of physical possession to 25 farmers. Altogether, 98 farmers received physical possession from the state government on Thursday.

Mamata also handed over crop kits to some farmers — these include seeds, a fertiliser kit and other necessary materials.

Out of the total land, 935 acres have been made arable and the farmers can now start farming. The physical possession of 103 acres of land was given to 298 farmers spread over five mouzas (talukas) well within the 12-week deadline of the Supreme Court on August 31.
