GUWAHATI: The Congress in Assam stated that Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is a hasty decision and will disturb the age-old communal harmony in the state.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi to examine the ramifications of the proposed amendment and submit a report to AICC for formulating the party’s policy on the issue.

The committee will submit its report by October 31.

The Congress had earlier advocated refugee status for those minorities, who face religious persecution in erstwhile East Pakistan.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, as introduced in the Lok Sabha, has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee of both the Houses under the chairmanship of Dr Satyapal Singh for examination and presenting a report to the Parliament.
