MUMBAI: If cops are looking for you, common sense says you would want to stay far away from them. But a woman from Sion, who was on the run for the last nine months following allegations of cheating, not only contacted the cops on the phone, she also marched to the police station on Wednesday demanding to know why the police were looking for her.
Jagruti Thakker, 45, has been accused of siphoning off the money that her clients handed over to deposit in FDs at the Sion Post Office.
A case was registered against her at the Sion Police Station in January, after a vegetable vendor complained that Thakker encashed his cheque of Rs 1.6 lakh that was to be deposited in the post office. The man alleged that Thakker asked him to leave the recipient slot in the cheque vacant, saying the post office needed it to be blank, then encashed the cheque in her husband's name.
The police said that while the vegetable vendor filed a complaint, several people approached the police saying they too had been cheated similarly, following which the cops, as part of the investigation, questioned Thakker's parents at their Grant Road residence a few times. They also found that she had separated from her husband, and had used his name to siphon off the funds.
The cops were in for a shock when Thakker a few days ago dialled the Sion Police Station herself, demanding to know why the cops were looking for her, and why were her parents being questioned.
“We told her that we wanted to speak to her regarding an important work and that she could visit the police station whenever she could. We agreed on a date but she didn't turn up. She called again and we agreed to meet at the police station on Wednesday morning. She was arrested at the police station itself,“ a source from the Sion Police Station said.
Assistant Inspector Santosh Gaikwad said Thakker has been booked for cheating and criminal breach of trust, and has been remanded in police custody till Friday.
