Tomorrow, Friday, October 21, will be the climax of the week long celebration of the festival popularly known as Sekyirene Yam festival.

The festival is expected to bring together the chiefs and people of Ejura, dignitaries including Chiefs, government officials, diplomats, the  clergy, Moslem community  and business executives.

This year’s yam festival is the first since the new chief of Ejura, Barima Osei Hwedie  II, who is also the Adontenhene of the Mampong Traditional Area was installed. It will be under the auspices of the Omanhene of the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area, Daasebre Osei Bonsu 11.

The festival is used to give thanks to the ancestors of the lands, the gods of the people and  the traditional stool in which the spirit of the state resides for providing the people  with a bumper harvest of fresh yams in the year just gone by.

A number of activities were held prior to the grand durbar. They included a clean-up exercise,  health screening, bicycle race, a football gala among others.

A day will be set aside to perform rituals to signify commencement of  the eating of  fresh yams.

Ejura is known to be a food basket in the country for its abundant production of yam and maize.

According to Barima Osei Hwedie 11, he will appeal for funds during the durbar for the establishment of a nursing and midwifery training school in the Ejura-Sekyedumasi Municipal Area.

He emphasised that the setting up of the school  in the municipality would make it the first tertiary institution in the municipality.
