Colva:Ganesh Gaonkar, prime accused in the Vanita Gaonkar suicide case, was granted conditional bail on Wednesday by the South Goa sessions court.
The accused was arrested on October 5, for his alleged involvement in his daughter-in-law’s death. Quepem police opposed the bail application, stating that the accused, who is the father-in-law of the deceased, subjected her to cruelty by demanding dowry of 50,000 from the amount she received through the Laadli Laxmi scheme.
Unable to bear the torture and harassment, the victim allegedly consumed poison at her residence and died on September 29, while undergoing treatment at GMC. Upon his arrest, Ganesh was hospitalized due to medical complications relating to high blood pressure and diabetes. On October 6, he moved court in a bail application. Sessions court judge Desmond D’Costa enlarged him on bail, upon furnishing a bond of 10,000 and surety of like amount. tnn
