NEW DELHI: The Union
road transport ministry has advised state transport departments to issue driving licences to disabled candidates, who clear all normal driving tests and formalities.
Citing that a double amputee has been issued a
driving licence in Indore recently, joint secretary (transport) Abhay Damle said that they have even asked the transport and motor vehicle registration authorities to immediately look into this issue.
Damle was speaking at a road safety conference organized by industry body
ASSOCHAM.
He added that the ministry has directed all states to have 10% of the total fleet of buses to be equipped with disabled-friendly features to ensure easier access.
“Majority of people with disabilities is mostly apprehensive of using public transport as presently state-owned and private buses are not equipped with special needs. State transport authorities have been asked to equip buses with these features,” Damle said.
He also asked vehicle manufacturers to focus on making two-wheelers safer as 80 per cent of the vehicles in the country fall under this category.
