A serious case review is to be carried out after two teenagers murdered a mother and daughter as they slept in their beds.

Katie Edwards and her mother Elizabeth were smothered with pillows and repeatedly stabbed in a "cold, calculated and callous" act.

Their 15-year-old killers are thought to be Britain's youngest ever couple to be guilty of murder.

Lincolnshire Safeguarding Children Board said it was a "tragic event".

Chairman Chris Cook said: "We can confirm that a serious case review has been commissioned into this case.

"We can't comment further until the review has been completed, when the findings will be published."

The pair murdered Mrs Edwards, 49, and Katie, 13, at their home in Spalding, Lincolnshire. They were both 14 at the time.

Jurors heard how they meticulously planned the murders before carrying them out "to the letter".

Afterwards they shared a bath, had sex and watched four Twilight movies before they were arrested.

Mrs Edwards was stabbed by the boy eight times, including twice in the throat. One blow injured her jugular and the other almost completely severed her windpipe.

Katie was stabbed twice in the neck before she was smothered by the boy.

The boy admitted murder at an earlier hearing, but the girl had denied murder and admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

She was found guilty on Tuesday following a six-day trial.

They are both due to be sentenced on 10 November, when Mr Justice Haddon-Cave will also rule on whether they should be identified.
