A festival celebrated mostly among the Hindu married women in India and abroad, Karwa Chauth marks the fourth day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Praying for the safety and well-being of their husbands and fiancés, women across the country meticulously observe fast, from sunrise to moonrise, with some not even drinking water. The festival, mostly celebrated in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and parts of Uttar Pradesh, is celebrated commemorating Mahabharata’s Savitri, who begged the God of death for her husband’s soul. In many parts of the country the preparation of the festival takes an early start with women getting ready with bright and beautiful outfits and different designs of ‘mehendi’ in their hands.
