Temple town Somnath woke up to a gruesome incident of a 26-year-old woman allegedly drowning her three young sons in a river and then trying to commit suicide by jumping into it on Tuesday.

RAJKOT: Temple town Somnath woke up to a gruesome incident of a 26-year-old woman allegedly drowning her three young sons in a river and then trying to commit suicide by jumping into it on Tuesday.
The woman Asma Khatun, a resident of Prabhas Patan near Somnath, threw her sons -Ashfaq (7), Sabir (4) and 18-month-old Inayat -in Hiran River near Shitala temple. Preliminary questioning suggested that Khatun was fed up of nagging domestic quarrels, which could have led to her taking such a drastic step.
“She first threw her eldest son Ashfaq into the river and then jumped with her other two sons.
However, the sons drowned but she held on to a tree branch on the river bank and survived,“ said R A Jadav, police inspector, Prabhas-Patan police station said. Bodies of the three children were fished out by locals.
“Khatun was living with her parents for the last four months due to estranged relationship with her husband Bashir Ibrahim Sheikh,“ Jadav said.
Police sources said that Bashir had gone missing few months and Khatun had filed an application with police alleging that her inlaws were responsible for his sudden disappearance.
However, Bashir returned few weeks ago and came met Khatun at her parents' house to mend fences. However, they could not reach an amicable settlement, police said.
