Chandigarh: Work on flyover at Sector 29\31 roundabout to begin in 10 months

Thereafter, the ministry will initiate the process of floating tenders. “We are hopeful of starting work on the project in around 10 months,” said Gadkari. In its comprehensive mobility plan submitted to the administration in 2009, RITES had stated that the roundabout witnesses high traffic volume of upto 1 lakh passenger car units.

Gadkari said that they have expedited the process as the local Member of Parliament (MP) Kirron Kher is really keen on having a flyover to address the problem of traffic congestion on the roundabout.

While thanking Gadkari, Kher hoped that the work on flyover will start soon so that the problem of traffic congestion is redressed. In his address, Gadkari expressed concern about traffic accidents and lamented the large numbers of deaths and injuries caused to persons on the country’s roads.

In this regard, he said that his Ministry had identified 726 black spots in the country. Gadkari added that road engineering plays a vital role in preventing accidents in the country. The minister said that it was necessary that at the stage of preparing the Detail Project Report (DPR), various aspects of engineering should be taken into consideration. Adding crash barriers, signs, lights and markers at appropriate places would go a long way in making our roads safer.

He informed that Katra would be connected by an expressway that will reduce the travel time by 6 to 7 hours. He said that the government has restarted almost 95 percent projects that have been stuck for various reasons.

The minister said that his government would make sincere efforts to add one-lakh-km roads during the five-year term. The minister also pointed out that there was an urgent need to reduce pollution in the country. As a step in that direction, he planned to scarp all 15-year-old trucks. As a part of this scheme it was proposed to recycle the various parts of the truck and also provide concession to mitigate the loss to owners.
