GHMC forced to repair roads

Instead of relaying the road, funds were deposited for the work.

Hyderabad: Multi-crore projects like the World Bank-aided drinking water network in Malkajgiri and the JNNURM-funded project in Rajendranagar, had asked for permit from the GHMC to dig up roads. But when it comes to relaying the roads after conclusion of projects, these agencies are reluctant and instead transfer funds to the GHMC.

This is what happened at Necklace Road where the sewerage board dug up the road to lay a pipeline to divert the Kukatpally nala. Instead of relaying the road, funds were deposited for the work. GHMC chief engineer (maintenance), Subash Singh said, “For Malkajgiri division, 360 km of road-cutting was permitted in 2014 to HMWS&SB. Works were to be finished by September but road-cutting is still on. For 48 months, people have been travelling on dug-up roads. Over Rs 200 crore is needed to repair the roads. These factors make the GHMC rethink on permissions.” He added, “On Necklace Road, for works near Sanjeevaiah Park, the HMWS&SB deposited Rs 60 crore in GHMC’s account to lay the road. But staff is already attending to other projects, which is why there are delays.”
